Dear Friends,

Once again, it’s time for our fall newsletter, I still cannot believe how fast time goes by. This past summer at Hannah and Friends went so quickly with so many activities for our residents and program participants. Camp was amazing as the kids and adults had a blast this summer. It was another summer that participants had somewhere safe to go and enjoy their friends that they have made over the years. I can remember summers where Hannah had nowhere to go. She had only two weeks of a school program and the rest of the summer was videos and a dip in the pool by herself. That is the sad reality for kids with special needs during the summer but not here at Hannah and Friends, not anymore. I would like to thank our interns from our local colleges for their hard work and their passion for our special kids and adults. We could not have a successful camp without them, they are amazing.

Dear Friends,

We hope all is well with you and your families. Spring is almost here now in South Bend thank God and we are really grateful to be over the past winter. Spring is a time to renew ourselves and think about all the things in life that we are grateful for, the blessings from God that we have. Looking back at the start of Hannah and Friends, this was just a dream we came up with. A place that was special and blessed where people with special needs could live a life that was full and happy. A place where families could bring their loved ones and enjoy a sanctuary where their child could be appreciated for who they are and the things they can do and not think about the things they can’t do. Looking back, we think it is a miracle that Hannah and Friends has become the place we are writing about, the place where there is peace and happiness.

Dear Friends,

I hope all is well with you and your families as you read this letter. So much has gone on this past spring and summer that it’s going to be hard to put it all in this letter to you. The Neighborhood is doing amazing. Our residents and participants in all the programs are very happy and active. Our summer camp as always was a great success and again the participants did not have to sit at home watching TV by themselves. They were here having a very active day of fun and learning and their parents knew they were well cared for by our staff and all of our caring volunteers.

Dear Friends,

After a long winter in South Bend, we are all thrilled that Spring has finally arrived. A little late, but that’s okay. I know the residents and program participants are anxious to get outside again to play some basketball, go to the playground and have some hayrides. Because the winters are so tough and the kids need a place to let off some steam, we are working on building an Activity Center right in the Neighborhood. This way the kids can ride their bikes, shoot some hoops, run around and have some fun in the wintertime. We are all excited about this new addition to the Neighborhood.

Dear Friends,

This time of year it is so beautiful in the Neighborhood, the trees are turning and the weather is getting that chill in the air. The residents and our participants are enjoying the outdoors and the unusual amount of sunshine we are blessed with. Now that Hannah and I are back in South Bend and she has enjoyed a summer filled with friends, camp and dance parties, I realize there really is no place like Hannah & Friends. We have lived in many places, and I could not find a place like this where there were activities to enjoy and a place that has residents on 40 acres of gorgeous land.

Dear Friends,

I hope you are all enjoying the early warm weather this year. Charlie & I were in South Bend in March and the trees were already blooming, which is very rare for South Bend. The Neighborhood is doing great and our residents and program participants have been enjoying the wonderful Spring weather. School will be ending soon and we are all looking forward to our new programs and the start of summer camp. Hannah will be excited to see all of her friends again when we return in May. Charlie Jr. and Coach are enjoying being in Kansas and getting ready for football season. We are excited to be Jayhawks and have been very appreciative of the warm reception Kansas has given to Hannah & Friends, as we already have had one successful fundraiser in the Kansas community.

A Mother’s Letter

When I was seven months into my pregnancy with Hannah, the doctors told me she had Polycystic Kidney Disease and wouldn’t live for more than a few days. Of course Charlie and I didn’t believe them and when she was born no one knew exactly what her problems were with her kidneys. We then went to another doctor who said she had Ureter problems, they were not open enough and the right kidney had to be removed because it wasn’t functioning at all. The other Ureter had to be opened up for better functioning. Han had that surgery at two months old.
