Hannah & Friends Celebrates 6th Anniversary of First Residents

By WNDU Staff Kasey Chronis

Hannah & Friends celebrated its sixth anniversary Tuesday since its first residents moved into the neighborhood. The nonprofit is dedicated to improving the quality of life for children and adults with special needs. In September 2009 the organization’s first four residents moved into the 40-acre community in South Bend. Balloons were released Tuesday afternoon to celebrate. Hannah & Friends aims to create a fun, safe and nurturing environment for kids and adults to grow.

“Hannah and Friends means to me an amazing place where there’s tranquility, peacefulness and a place for people with what we like to call different abilities; people with special needs, all different types can come here and live their life in a great way. Their family members can come here, no one is judged here. It’s just a place of peace and happiness and fun,” said Maura Weis, founder and executive director.

Hannah & Friends now has 12 residents living in the neighborhood.

The nonprofit also provides day and evening programs.
