Hundreds take strides in support for Hannah and Friends

St. Joseph County – Hundreds spent Saturday morning taking steps to better the lives of those living in our community.

Those participating in the Hannah and Friends 5K and Fun Walk hope their efforts this morning will help take the ‘dis’ out of disabilities.

Former Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis, and his wife Maura created the Hannah and Friends charity and living community.

“We wrote the idea on a napkin when we were down in South Carolina in 2003,” said Charlie Weis.

Charlie and Maura’s daughter, Hannah, is the inspiration for the group. She has Global Development Delays.

“We didn’t know if Hannah would be able to make it. Mentally Hannah is about two or three-years-old. But she is thriving. It has been a great experience,” said Charlie. “Better than we could ever have imagined,” he added.

The top three runners in each age group of Saturday’s race will receive unique handcrafted awards. The awards were made by participants in the Hannah and Friends Day Program.

Proceeds from the race will help support the organization.
