AmeriCorps - ServabilityCorps
ServabilityCorps is a new AmeriCorps program at Hannah and Friends to increase awareness for individuals with special needs and create meaningful job and volunteer opportunities integrated within the community. AmeriCorps is a national service program providing direct service experiences, as well as an education award and a living allowance.
Members will serve to develop two new programs:
- “Be a Friend” Education Program - an educational program and presentation that will teach students the importance of treating individuals with developmental disabilities with greater respect.The program aims to overcome the stigma that individuals with different abilities should be feared and ignored.
- “Dream Jobs” Mentor Program – A program to allow individuals with special needs the opportunity to be mentored by a current or retired professional in the community, as well as a chance to gain valuable job skills.
Service Location:
Members will complete hours at the program site: Hannah & Friends Neighborhood (51250 Hollyhock Road, South Bend, IN) as well as program visits to schools and other sites. Members can also complete some hours at their own home.
Program Benefits:

- Training in First Aid, CPR, as well as valuable skills for working with individuals with special needs
- Invaluable experience working with individuals with special needs and raising awareness for the special needs community
Specific responsibilities of members will include:
- Serve directly with individuals with developmental disabilities
- Interact with and interview parents and educators of individuals with special needs
- Research, plan and design educational program
- Implement and present education program in local schools
- Recruit local professionals to serve as mentors
- Promote participation, implement creative ideas to execute “Dream Jobs” Mentor Program & “Be a Friend:"
- Serve as mentors
- Recruit volunteers
Qualifications for Membership:
- Age 17 or older
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalency
- A US citizen, national or lawful permanent resident
Ideal candidates will demonstrate:
- Excellent communication skills – written and oral
- Ability to teach and train others
- Strong organizational skills
- Basic computer skills – Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- Ability to serve as a team and independently
- Flexibility to serve in a variety of settings
Start Dates: December 2011, January 2012, March 2012, or June 2012
End Dates: May 15, 2012 or August 15, 2012
